Cornerstone Club's Expansion Has Two Timelines, and Only One Starts This Winter

Read the trade press coverage of Cornerstone Club's announcement this month and you'd think everything is arriving at once: a golf course renovation, new cabins, a thermal village, a performance center, and access to one of Telluride's most exclusive ski clubs. Reef Capital Partners, which now leads the 4,800-acre Montrose community, framed it as a single sweeping evolution. For members, it isn't one thing. It's two, running on completely different clocks, and only one of them changes anything about how you use the club this season.

What the Announcement Actually Covers

The scope is real. Reef Capital Partners has brought in CoralTree Hospitality to run day-to-day operations, and the plans touch nearly every corner of the property: a renovated golf course, an expanded spa and thermal village with indoor and outdoor pools and private treatment cabins, a converted performance center with racquetball courts and upgraded fitness equipment, eight new overnight cabins, and a resort-style pool and event lawn at the clubhouse. General manager Andy Deiro called it building on a foundation that was always more than a golf course. VP of golf operations OD Vincent described the goal as preserving what members already love while investing for the next generation.

That's the pitch. The mechanics matter more than the pitch, because the pieces don't land in the same season.

What Changes This Winter

The one perk you can actually use this year has nothing to do with golf. Starting winter 2026, Cornerstone real estate members gain access to Crest Club Telluride, the private membership community inside the Madeline Hotel & Residences, an Auberge Resorts Collection property in Mountain Village. Crest Club itself isn't new. It debuted in January 2025, which means by the time Cornerstone members walk in this winter, the club will have a full season and a half of member habits already established, including the Falcon Room routines Madeline staff have already described publicly.

Membership includes valet parking, a private locker with boot and glove dryers, dedicated ski valet, complimentary breakfast, a concierge team, priority reservations at Timber Room and Black Iron Kitchen + Bar, and year-round access to the Madeline's Alpine Swim Club, heated pool, and gym. The exclusive lounge is the Falcon Room, a members-only bar built around rare spirits. Madeline general manager Allen Highfield said the club has been embraced even more than we imagined, with some members showing up daily during ski season just to warm up between runs or meet friends.

For Cornerstone members, this is a genuinely different kind of access. You're not buying a Mountain Village property to get a Mountain Village ski club. You're getting it through your Montrose membership, a highway drive from where the club actually sits. That's worth sitting with before you plan your winter. The convenience Crest Club members describe, dropping in for a warm-up or a quick locker swap between runs, works differently when your starting point is down in Montrose rather than a walk from the gondola.

What Doesn't Change Until Summer 2027

The golf course is the part everyone associates with Cornerstone, and it's the part that takes the longest. The renovation of the club's Matt Dusenberry-designed course, originally laid out by Greg Norman in 2007, is scheduled for completion in summer 2027. The scope includes new turfgrass, refined fairways, rebuilt bunkers, and improved cart paths across the layout, plus a full redesign of two signature holes. Hole 12 becomes a short par-4 built to reward strategic play rather than raw distance. Hole 18 turns into a par-5 finisher, with a new bar and grill going in beside the 18th green that will sit alongside the existing Cap Rock restaurant in the clubhouse and the Elk Shack out on the course.

That's a full year from now, at minimum. If you're a member who plays regularly, the practical question isn't what the finished product looks like. It's what a season of active renovation work does to your ability to book tee times the way you always have, and that's a conversation worth having directly with the club rather than assuming based on the press release.

The Timeline, Side by Side

Window What actually happens
Winter 2026 Crest Club Telluride access begins for Cornerstone real estate members
2026 through early 2027 Course renovation, spa and thermal village build-out, cabin construction, performance center conversion all underway
Summer 2027 Renovated course, new 18th-hole bar and grill, and remaining amenities scheduled to be complete

The gap between the left column and the right one is the whole story. One perk is usable in a few months. Everything else is a construction season away.

More Members Before More Amenities

There's a second timing detail buried in the announcement that matters just as much as the construction schedule. One Cornerstone memberships are now available, sold explicitly as a chance to join ahead of the club's next phase of growth, and the community's public real estate release is expected in 2027, the same year the course renovation wraps.

That sequencing means membership sales are open now, while the amenities that justify a larger membership base are still a year or more from finished. If you're already a member, the practical effect is straightforward: you may see more new faces at Cap Rock or on the range before the thermal village or the new cabins are open to soften the load. Growth in membership numbers and growth in physical capacity don't have to arrive together, and here they aren't.

Why the Ski Perk Came First

None of this happened in isolation. Telluride's private club landscape has been reshaping itself for more than a year, and Cornerstone's move only makes sense against that backdrop. Crest Club Telluride was the first mover, debuting at the Madeline in January 2025. Southworth, the developer behind a portfolio of private clubs worldwide, is building The Alpine Club at San Sophia Station, the gondola junction where downtown Telluride meets Mountain Village, with a grand opening targeted for the 2026-27 ski season. A Four Seasons Resort and Residences is set to debut in Mountain Village in late 2027. Three private, four-season club models landing in the same market inside a roughly three-year window.

Cornerstone had a choice in how to respond. Building its own on-mountain outpost in Telluride would have meant years of entitlement work and construction in a market where land is scarce and expensive. Instead, Reef Capital Partners bought its members a seat at someone else's table. The Crest Club partnership gets Cornerstone members into the Telluride private-club scene on a timeline measured in months rather than years, while the slower, more expensive work of renovating a golf course down in Montrose proceeds on its own schedule.

That's the real shape of this announcement. It isn't one club leveling up all at once. It's a membership organization buying speed in one market while investing patience in another, and the two don't arrive on the same afternoon.

What to Watch This Season

If you're a Cornerstone member, the useful move this fall is asking the club directly about two things the press release doesn't spell out: how Crest Club reservations and access actually work day to day for members based down in Montrose, and what the course renovation schedule means for tee time availability through the 2027 build-out. The marketing language answers what's coming. It doesn't answer when you'll feel it.
